This method is based on estimated boundary-layer transition lines such as those presented in Fig. 148 (see also [71]).
Sailplane airfoils typically operate at Reynolds numbers at which the boundary-layer transition characteristics are highly sensitive lo factors such as airfoil geometry, surface quality, and free stream turbulence.
Freeslream turbulence in a general-purpose wind tunnel can trigger boundary-layer transition, inhibiting formation of the laminar bubble (see also Fig. 24).
The boundary-layer transition point can be determined using a stethoscope lifted at the end with a thin metal tube.
A far superior method employs infrared imaging techniques to map the boundary-layer transition zone in great detail.
